Scientists and students attending the AAAS Annual Meeting can sharpen their job skills at 15 career workshops offered through the week in Vancouver. The sessions are free to all meeting participants and designed for all degree levels and career stages.
The workshops include practical advice on using technology to search for a new job, negotiating a better workload or a better salary, and learning how to network effectively. Several sessions focus on science communication, with tips on how to engage the public and convince "decision-makers" from corporate and academic leaders to government officials. Many of the workshops feature hands-on, interactive training--like the bingo game that teaches participants how to avoid presentation pitfalls.
Other workshops address personal development challenges for women and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered researchers. And for scientists looking for a new direction in their work, there are sessions on turning research into a compelling children's book or tutoring at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and becoming a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow.
Attendance at the Annual Meeting requires registration. To attend only these events for free, on-site registration is required. AAAS registration is located at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Exhibit Hall B1.
